COLLINS V CALFORDSEADEN
On Sunday 23rd May, the hottest day of the year to date, Collins Contractors’ team of outstanding footballers once again journeyed to The Valley, home of Charlton Athletic Football Club in their annual encounter against Calfordseaden’s finest.
This year the teams were each to be blessed with the added inclusion of an ex Charlton professional - Collins had the legendary John Humphrey and Calfords had the equally impressive Steve Gritt lined up to boost their ranks, which was to be an added bonus to what is always a fantastic day out for all the players / spectators in attendance. Unfortunately due to a last minute injury John Humphrey had to pull out of the fixture, but the Collins team remained determined.
In their usual fashion the Collins Team, with their impeccable attacking prowess, started strong; with Calfords keeping them at bay with their attractive style of pass and move football. After many saved shots, (and a few strikes to the cross bar) Collins’ resolve paid off and the first 45 minutes finished with a goal for Collins.
Knowing the Calfords team would use the half time break to reassess their performance and look to the attack, the Collins team began the second half proactively, which proved a successful move.
The Collins side increased their dominance in the latter stages of the second half and despite valiant performances from everyone in the Calfords team, the score ended 4-1.
The only down point on an otherwise fantastic day being a serious injury to the Collins Captain, Trevor Bennett, who suffered a ruptured Achilles during the game. Everyone at Collins wishes him well and a speedy recovery.
Collins would like to thank Calfordseaden for a truly brilliant day of football and fun for the 4th year running.
We are very happy to retain the Calfords v Collins Challenge Cup for the 4th Year and look forward to 2011, and the pre-match training, of course.
